Style Guide
Grand Targhee Ski and Snowboard Foundation’s (GTSSF) mission is to provide affordable ski and snowboard programs for young athletes to meet their individual potential for excellence through education and opportunity for competition.
How the Grand Targhee Ski & Snowboard Foundation looks, sounds, and behaves on gtssf.org, in email, and in print. Every rule here is already in use on the live site, or is marked as proposed. Change the rule here first, then the site.
Affordable Programs. Individual Potential.
Everything GTSSF publishes starts here. The mission says what we do, the vision says why it matters to the valley, and the values decide how a program, a page, or a reply to a parent should feel.
Our mission is to provide affordable ski and snowboard programs for young athletes to meet their individual potential for excellence through education and opportunity for competition.
Inspiring future stewards of the mountains to pursue personal development and engagement in the community by providing sustainable, affordable access to all athletes and their families.

Where We Come From
- 1988 · FoundedStarted by local ski racing legends Deb and Dana Mackenzie, Brad (Squeak) Melehes, Mark Melehes, and John Borstelman as Teton Valley’s first nonprofit.
- 1988 · The first ski swapThe first annual “Tug Boat” (Terry Palmer) Memorial Ski Swap raised the money to operate. The Ski Swap still runs every November.
- AlumniSage Cattabriga-Alosa; two-time Olympian and Olympic silver medalist Jaelin Kauf (2018, 2022); Red Bull athlete Kai Jones.
- TodayDevelopment and competition programs in alpine, cross country, freeride, and snowboard for hundreds of local athletes, following U.S. Ski & Snowboard athlete development guidelines.
Bright Snow, Plain Words, on the Athlete’s Side.
GTSSF should look like a clear morning at Grand Targhee and sound like a good coach: direct, encouraging, and specific about what happens next.
Look
- White space carries the page; color comes from photography and a few blue actions.
- Navy type, blue titles, a sky-blue header band, gold only for highlights.
- Real athletes on real snow at Grand Targhee and around Teton Valley.
- Uppercase Circular for page titles, labels, and buttons; sentence case everywhere else.
Tone
- Encouraging. Progress over podiums; every level is welcome.
- Plain. Short sentences, real numbers, no jargon a new family would trip on.
- Local. Name the place: Grand Targhee, Teton Valley, Driggs, Victor.
- Respectful. Parents and volunteers are partners, not customers.

Button Verbs
One verb-led label per button, title case in the editor (the button style sets the uppercase). Never “Click here” or “Learn more”; say where the button goes.
A Snowflake for the Foundation, a Trail Badge for the Teams.
The snowflake lockup is the foundation’s signature and leads on every page header. The GTSSF trail badge is the compact mark for avatars, favicons, and small spaces. Always start from an original file; never a screenshot.
Primary Logos
Alternative / Artifacts
Approved alternates for specific jobs. Each downloads as an SVG from the website.
Rules
- Always an original file: the logo package for the primary logos, the SVG downloads above for alternates.
- Minimum width 160px for the horizontal lockup, 48px for the badge.
- Clear space on every side equal to one snowflake arm.
- Full color on white or sky; inverse or white on navy.
Never
- Recolor, outline, add a shadow, or stretch the mark.
- Place it on a busy photo without a navy overlay.
- Pair two GTSSF lockups on the same surface.
- Rebuild the wordmark in live text.
Navy Type, Blue Actions, Sky Above, Gold to Celebrate.
The palette is the Blocksy global palette, and Kadence blocks read the same values. Pick colors from the palette in the editor, never a custom hex. Ratios are measured against the surface named; text needs 4.5:1, large text and UI edges 3:1.

The Fluid Scale Proposed v2
Seven steps, each a clamp() that grows smoothly from a 375px phone to a 1440px desktop. Sizes are in rem, so browser zoom and user font settings still work. The site measured 17 different sizes on desktop; every one of them maps to a step below.
--gt-4xl--gt-3xl--gt-2xl--gt-xl--gt-lg--gt-base--gt-smNothing is set below 14px, with one deliberate exception: the bottom tab bar (12px labels, 10px sublabels). Body copy keeps a 65–75 character measure. Headings use text-wrap: balance; paragraphs use text-wrap: pretty.

Groups in Motion, Coaches in the Frame, the Tetons Behind.
GTSSF photography shows a community, not a highlight reel: athletes doing the sport together, listening and cheering, with the coaches, parents, and volunteers who make it happen and the mountains that make it ours.
What We Photograph
Groups in the Activity
Teams skiing, riding, and training together. More than one athlete in the frame, doing the thing the page is about.
Participation & Respect
Athletes listening to a coach, cheering a teammate, waiting their turn at the start. Effort and good manners, not just results.
Majestic Scenery
The Tetons, Grand Targhee’s ridgelines, and Teton Valley light. Let the landscape frame the group.
Parents Involved
Parents volunteering at races, cheering at the finish, working the Ski Swap. Families are part of the program.
Coaches Coaching
Demonstrating a turn, debriefing on the ridge, celebrating with the group. Coaches belong in the photo.
Board & Volunteers at Work
Board members and volunteers at events, award ceremonies, and the Ski Swap, actively involved rather than posed.
Shot list for this season: the library is strong on teams and scenery and light on parents volunteering and board members at work. Capture both at the Ski Swap, on race days, and at awards.
What Makes the Cut
- Every face in focus, back row included. Check at 100% before uploading.
- Even light on faces: open sun or bright overcast; no dappled shade or squinting into the sun.
- Real interaction: laughing, arms up, looking at each other, a coach in the frame.
- The group fills the frame, arranged in layers (kneel, stand) rather than a single line.
- Crisp contrast without clipping: bright gear against white snow, detail kept in jackets and sky.
- At least 1920px on the long edge; square crops for intros, 3:2 for wide bands, square corners throughout.
Avoid
- Heavy HDR, oversharpening, or filters that make snow look gray or skin look painted.
- Soft phone shots and screenshots of social posts; they break up at full width.
- Stock photography. The few stock images still on the site should be replaced over time.
- Text over a photo without a navy overlay of at least 60%.
- Close-ups of minors without a signed release; alt text names the activity, not the child.
The Library, by Program
46 photos selected from the media library for group energy, sharp faces, and strong light. Each caption names the GTSSF value the photo shows, so the next photo can be chosen the same way.
Alpine
8 photosWhere most GTSSF athletes start, and where many stay. Flow builds a love of the mountain; Race takes U10 through U16 athletes into gates, timing, and Intermountain Division competition. Photograph the team, not just the racer: coaches in the frame, parents at the finish, friends between runs.

Freeride
8 photosFreeride turns strong skiers into thoughtful big-mountain athletes. The pictures should carry the team’s personality and the respect the sport demands: scouting lines, listening to coaches, and celebrating together on the IFSA podium.

Snowboard
8 photosSnowboard athletes progress from Flow to the U12–U19 team, riding the whole mountain and the park. Show riders with their coach, hiking for one more lap, and the scenery that makes the day unforgettable.

Cross Country
8 photosNordic is the foundation’s most social sport: Flow, Rec, Prep, and Comp, Tuesday Night Nordic, and races across the Intermountain Division. Capture the group celebrating, coaches out on the trail with their athletes, and the Tetons above the track.

Programs
14 photosPrograms keep athletes training all year: bike camps, summer Nordic roller skiing, Strength Training, and Trampoline Training. Photograph them the way we photograph winter: groups working together, coaches teaching, and the valley behind them. Running is missing from the library; add it to the shot list.

One Container, One Rhythm, Copy That Flows.
Every page sits in a 1200px container with 5vw edges. Sections stack on a 50px rhythm on desktop. Program pages open with the flowing intro: the photo floats right and the copy wraps around it, then continues full width.
Page frame. Blocksy title type 1: breadcrumbs above a plain uppercase title, no photo banner. The current page is hidden from the breadcrumb.
Flowing intro. Class gtssf-intro gtssf-flow; photo gtssf-flow-photo floats right at 40% with a 96px gap. Photo first on phones. Unsynced pattern “GTSSF: Flowing Page Intro”.
Sections and grids. Two columns for paired content (Sign Up | Opportunities), card grids four across on desktop, two on tablet, one on phones.
Vertical Rhythm
| Between | Space | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Header and page title | Blocksy title spacing | Breadcrumbs 14px uppercase above the H1. |
| Paragraph and section heading | 40px | Margins collapse, so 40px is the full gap. |
| Section heading and its copy | 12px | Headings belong to what follows them. |
| Paragraphs | 16px | Lists 14px after. |
| Last section and footer | 50px | Blocksy content area spacing, every page. |

Website User Interface
Header & Tab Bar
Navigation: Circular 500, uppercase. The tab bar is fixed to the bottom of the screen: square cards on navy, label above sublabel.
Page Title
Buttons
Primary: blue fill, white Circular 700, 14px uppercase, 0.05em tracking, 12px 24px padding, square corners, navy on hover. Header Donate: 13px today; type v2 lifts it to 14px. The small gold button is the same size in Gold with navy text (7.0:1), for one secondary call such as Register Now. On a navy band, Gold marks the single most important call.
Program Intro
Freeride is designed for strong skiers who wish to focus on all-mountain skiing and learn skills in the terrain park.
Emphasis will be on responsible and realistic decision-making in big mountain scenarios and technical focus in the terrain park.
NOTE: GTSSF Nordic competes within the Intermountain Division. Notes are body-size text in the secondary ink, never smaller.

Readable by Everyone, on Every Screen.
Families read this site on a phone in a parking lot at 7 AM. Design for that moment and it works everywhere.
Contrast
Text 4.5:1 and large text 3:1 (WCAG 2.2 AA). Navy and blue pass on white; sky, gold, and butter are backgrounds, never text on white.
Size & Measure
14px minimum (the tab bar is the one exception), 17–18px body, 65–75 characters per line. Type scales with browser zoom because every size is in rem.
Structure
One H1 per page, headings in order, no skipped levels for styling. Use a style, not a bigger heading tag.
Links & Focus
Links are underlined in body copy. Every interactive element shows a 2px blue focus ring offset 4px.
Images
Every meaningful image has alt text; decorative images have empty alt. Logos are named by the organization.
Motion
Hover moves are subtle (a 1.04 image scale) and switch off for people who prefer reduced motion.
